“Saraina can cover over 400 nautical miles (740km) up and down the Sumatran coast, in search of the best waves and conditions.”
Providing you a safe and comfortable journey through the Mentawai Islands, Saraina offers individuals, or charter groups (maximum of ten) customised board-riding adventures that include flexible trip dates and start locations courtesy of an unlikely surf-crazed duo.
Introducing Indonesian surf legend, Dedi, and his Aussie partner-in-crime, Trent Woodleigh – a surf-crazed pair who offer their clients an unrivalled standard of quality, experience and atmosphere.
In the early 90s, long before the Mentawais was classified as a global surfing mecca, Dedi used traditional handmade canoes to ride waves largely due to the fact that he’d never even seen a surfboard. It was an era when local people feared the ocean, but Dedi stayed true to his passion and became the first local to become a certified tourism guide; it was a trail-blazing accomplishment that’s seen him go on to work with SurfAid; team up with with Sumatran surfers to establish West Sumatra’s first boardriders club while most recently protesting against illegal fishing in the Mentawais and advocating for a sustainable environment for locals and visitors alike.
Introduced to surfing as a fifteen-year-old, Sydney Northern Beaches native Trent Woodleigh knew from a very early age that he wanted to make a living from surf travel and adventure. Serving a waterman’s apprenticeship that included stints as a professional lifeguard and surf coach, Trent eventually graduated with full honours from the University of Froth and has worked for the last decade as a vessel master and engineer.
Together, Dedi and Trent are proud owner-operators of Surfing Mentawais and the jewel in their crown is Saraina – a 19.5 metre yacht constructed from local Indonesian hard wood and powered by a super reliable 360 HP turbo-diesel which provides a comfortable cruising speed of 8.5 knots.
Recently refurbished, Saraina offers air-conditioned rooms and lounge area, with all the necessary amenities to feel confident, comfortable & safe at sea. Saraina’s onboard chef supplies freshly prepared meals, snacks and drinks. The crew provide snorkelling and fishing gear as well as transport to and from Padang. There is also Discover Mentawai packages for those wanting a true cultural experience.
Promising, local knowledge, safety and comfort, and an epic adventure, Saraina is perfect for groups, families or anyone wanting to immerse themselves into everything Mentawais has on offer.

The Mentawai Islands are one of the most consistent surf destinations on the entire planet. The unrivalled power of storms born in the southern Indian Ocean is concentrated toward these islands, before being amplified; the result is consistent and mechanical quality swells during the Southern Hemisphere winter (late April to early November).
Perfectly shaped reefs and long distance swells means the Mentawais has plethora of waves to suit all types of surfers, from beginners to experienced chargers. Waves typically range in size from three-to-twelve foot with the average wave height being about six feet. In some parts of the Mentawais, multiple surf spots are located within one-hour boat ride of each other. However, there are still loads of uncrowded waves to be found and Surfing Mentawais is happy to cater to those groups who wish to get off the beating track and start their surf adventure further north, or south.
Bank Vaults: this right-hand barrel picks up mega swell, but can still be fun a medium size swell. The reef’s the real deal, so make sure you’re confident to pick a line and commit to the pit or you’ll be making a deposit of skin ‘n’ bone.
Bintangs: this hollow righthand wave is short and has a steep take off.
Burgerworld: this right-hand pointbreak is a consistent wave that offers a long workable wall perfect for inexperienced surfers.
Ebay: this lefthander offers a short, but hollow barrel right from the take off and holds a solid swell size.
Four Bobs: this wave breaks both right and left and is great for inexperienced, or less confident surfers.
Greenbush: this hollow lefthander is a widow maker and not to be messed with – swells motor in from deep water and unload onto reef. Greenbush is dangerous, powerful and beautiful barrel heaven.
Hideaways: this wave is very shallow at low tide and lifts from a small section into the reef into a big, hollow barrel. It’s a wave made famous in lots of high-performance surf flicks.
Hollow Trees (HTs): this perfect righthander is one of the most recognisable waves throughout the region; it’s a mechanical, consistent barrel which can claim souls on the inside section. Again, it’s a wave made famous by high-performance surf flicks.
Icelands: this is a perfect little lefthand wave that’s fun on smaller swell days.
Lances Left: this fun, long left offers rippable walls, before throwing out a heft barrel section further down the line.
Macaroni’s (Maccas): this is widely considered to be one of the best lefthand waves on the planet and it’s is not for the faint hearted. It boasts long, workable walls and long barrel rides.
Nipussi: this is a fun, but short and gentle righthander that breaks into deep water and is perfect for the surfer looking to avoid clashes with the reef.
No Kanduis: this thunderous lefthand barrel breaks best on bigger swells; it’s a wave broken into sections that offers the experienced surfer the pit of a lifetime.
Pit Stops: this righthand wave works better on smaller swells and is the perfect high-performance platform for aerials and progressive surfing. It’s a wave made famous in high-performance surf flicks.
Rags Left: bring your gun to this show, because this heavy lefthand barrel works best in bigger swell.
Rags Rights: get ready to get slabbed on this righthand wave that works in the same fashion as HTs.
Rifles: the name of this righthander is spot on… Take off, and shoot down the line into a perfect barrel. The longer the wave becomes, the longer and more hollow the barrel section gets. This wave is only for experienced surfers and has been made famous by high-performance surf flicks.
Scarecrows: this lefthander offers offers fun section and is best surfed on the low tide.
Telescopes: this peeling lefthander can get somewhat heavy on big swells that unload onto shallow reef.
The Hole: this wave lefthander immediately barrels from takeoff and handles big swells
Thunders: this big lefthander works best on big swells and offers surfers a workable sections along with the odd quick tube.
The best tip to anyone thinking of taking a boat trip to the Mentawais is that you’re not going to a Milan fashion show; this means you don’t need 72 different outfits, so pack light. We’ve supplied the below list to ensure you’re bringing what you really need.
Most people usually bring two-to-four boards, but it helps the study the swell forecast before you depart so that you can make informed choices about your quiver.
The Mentawai Islands are very remote; so all guests aboard Saraina are required to have full-comprehensive travel and medical insurance that includes Medevac options and compensation for loss of charter due to unforeseen circumstances, or emergencies.
We also suggest that you consult with Doctor prior to departure to ensure you’re up-to-speed on vaccinations suggested for the South East Asia region.
Before jumping on your flight, ensure you’ve got a minimum of 6 months left before your passport expires and ensure you’ve got enough cash to pay the $US25 Indonesian arrival tax (get online to see what nationalities fall under this tax).
Don’t forget that Saraina is currently the only boat that is based in the Mentawai Islands; it’s a boast that means she starts her trips from the islands (and not mainland Padang). After you arrive in Padang, we provide you transfers from the airport to the ferry and the ferry across to the Mentawai Islands to your new home afloat on the high seas. We operate around ferry times leaving from Padang to the Mentawai islands and return.

The islands are apart of the “Coral Triangle” and have over 500 species of reef-building coral and 300 species of fish. Recognised as part of the “global centre of marine diversity” guests may see dolphins, sea turtles and dugongs.
The Mentawais experienced geographic isolation until the 19th century and as a result, the thick exotic rainforest is home to plant and animal species which cannot be found anywhere else in the world – Saraina crew’s favourite being the Mentawai leaf monkey. Upon trekking in through the jungles visitors can catch a glimpse of any one of the 134 bird species or the snakes, squirrels and chipmunks who also call the ancient rainforest home.
Having grown up in the islands, Dedi owner, operator and guide is happy to share his local knowledge on the best fishing spots in the region. All fishing equipment is provided on board.
