“Expansive charters at great value for money.”
About the Oasis
Oasis is an 80-foot traditional Indonesian charter boat operating in the Mentawai Islands. The boat is the realised dream for a group of seasoned travelling surfers who first made their way to the Mentawai in 1995 as nothing more than feral explorers, subsisting on barely more than the abundant Indian Ocean perfection.
Since those raw beginnings they’ve made their way back year after year, gaining valuable experience, knowledge and life-long friends, which all culminated in the construction of Oasis 10 years ago.
The crew now use this accumulated knowledge and experience to deliver their guests, of whom the boat fits 10, the best possible waves during their charter, and do it at a rate that offers great value for money.
During their time aboard Oasis will ferry surfers to any fabled lineup they desire in the Mentawai, including all the big ticket waves – Macaronis, Greenbush, HT’s etc. However, should guests desire, Oasis is also able to seek out waves the wider region including visits to the Banyak Islands, Telo Islands and Nias to the north, plus some remote gems to the south.
Oasis is all about delivering your version of the perfect surf trip, and will tailor the breaks they visit based on the skill level of their guests. If you’re not up for double overhead freight trains over bone dry reef, the Oasis crew aren’t gonna push you, however, if that is what you’re after they’ll do everything they can to deliver it.
The Oasis crew knows that a surf trip to this part of the world is something you want to remember for the rest of your life, which is why each season they welcome professional surf photographer Andy Potts aboard to document their guests’ trips. At the end of each charter all shots are available for guests to purchase and take home as a permanent reminder of the waves of their life.

For most surfers, the waves of the Mentawai Islands need no introduction. Nowhere else on the planet will you find such a heavy concentration of amazing waves breaking at so many varied set-ups in such a relatively small area – quite simply, it’s surfing’s Disneyland.
So when do you go? Well, the Mentawai Islands do receive swell year round, but traditionally the best time to plan your charter would be in the window from April to September. This is when the dry season is in residence and strong South-Southwest swells roll into the region from the southern latitudes. This is also when the humidity, chance of rain and strong winds are also at their lowest.
If crowds are a no go situation for you, a visit during the wet season – October to March can still deliver great waves, but there is a higher chance you could get skunked.
Although its reputation is for heavy, rifling tubes over shallow coral reefs, there are waves to suit all abilities scattered throughout the Mentawai Islands. The crew of Oasis is there to listen to what you want from your trip and will adjust the itinerary accordingly to keep all parties happy. The abundance of options available will ensure an intermediate surfer has just as much fun as the most hardened Indo veteran.
So what will you be riding? Conditions permitting, there is no spot in the Mentawai a charter with Oasis can’t get you to. This of course includes the big-ticket waves such as Macaronis with its playful mechanical perfection, the heart stopping gauntlet-run of Greenbush, The ridiculous perfection of HT’s and the almighty right-left combo of Rifles and Nokandui to name a few.
Oasis also offers guests the opportunity to break free of the immediate Mentawai area and head further afield in search of new adventures and perfection, this includes:
This small group of Islands to the north of the Mentawai packs a whole lot of perfection into a small area. The Telos are a great option for outrunning the crowds of the Mentawai, or for those guests seeking something slightly mellower than the waves to the south.
The mythical Lagundri Bay is on the bucket list of surfers worldwide with good reason. When it’s on, Nias offers one of the best rights on the planet located inside a large picturesque bay. A trip here is one you’ll never forget.
The Banyaks are still somewhat of an unknown quantity for most surfers. While it may be slightly more fickle than the islands to the south, the quality on offer is well worth the trip, especially if the captain gets word Treasure Island is going to be good.
Oasis guests will never go hungry. Along with great fresh fish and seafood recipes, they also serve up superb local Indonesian Padang style curries over rice, but if you’re a meat and potatoes kind of fellow never fear Oasis also serves up plenty of traditional western foods.
Onboard the Oasis guests are allocated three healthy meals per day, plus a range of complimentary snacks all day.
To stay hydrated, there are plenty of juices, sodas and waters to choose from, and guests also have three complimentary beers per day.
While there’s no doubt a trip to the Mentawai is about one activity above all others, it’s worthwhile noting that you are floating through a tropical paradise at the same time.
Why not make use of the complimentary snorkel gear and check out the thriving marine life beneath the waves.
Oasis also has complimentary fishing gear, and encourages guests to get out the rod and wet a line. You never know, you might just land dinner for the night or a plate of fresh sashimi.
As Oasis travels between the waves, they’ll also be trolling with lures to catch fish. Often times we pull in Dorados, Onos, Mackerel, Grouper and the occasional Marlin or Sailfish.
Surfers travelling to the Mentawai Islands will always fly in via Minangkabau International Airport in Padang.
Upon arrival you will be met by a representative who will assist you, before transporting you either to a hotel or the harbor to await the commencement of your charter.
