“More Speed equals more waves”
About MV Addiction
The seventy or so islands that make up the Mentawai chain sit approximately 150kms off the western coast of Sumatra, and despite their close proximity, the islands and the native mentawai people that inhabit them remained isolated until the 19th century. It is thought this was due to the notoriously strong winds and currents of the Sumatran Strait, and also the sharp coral reefs that surround the islands.
That isolation has long since ended however, and as the Ments emerged from beneath their veil of mystery, it became clear that those reefs were producing something very special for surfers.
Today the Mentawai Islands are known worldwide as surfing’s premier fun park. The chain packs more world class waves and variety into its relatively small area than anywhere else on the planet. A trip to this remote Indonesian archipelago is a must for every surfer.
No matter what your surf trip appetite consists of, the Mentawai can fill your order perfectly. Here you’ll find lefts, rights and peaks breaking in every conceivable fashion – from super mellow runners to high performance fun parks to adrenaline inducing, white knuckle tubes.
The region is one of the most highly trafficked surfing destinations on the planet, so a good decision on your choice of charter is crucial. One of the key ingredients for beating the crowds in the Mentawai is speed. Something the MV Addiction has in spades.
The MV Addiction is a luxurious 24 metre high-speed vessel, with an impressive top laden speed of 26 knots, for those not up to speed with their nautical terminology, rest assured this is fast … real fast. This means less time crossing, checking waves, stressing about missing sessions and more time surfing.
Another key ingredient for a successful trip is experience, and the MV Addiction has over 15 years experience in running charters in the area. It’s also owned, skippered and run by surfers, so they know exactly what you’re there for.
With these to two factors combined, the MV Addiction is sure to get you into the waves of a lifetime.

Please ensure you have this for your entire stay in the Mentawai.
The waves that fringe the endless reefs of the Mentawai need little introduction. Put simply, they are among the best on the planet – There’s a reason the Mentawai Islands have been the location of choice for the majority of big budget surf movies and magazine features over the last 15 years.
No where else on the planet offers the quality and variety you’ll be offered on a trip to this fabled destination. Backlit tropical tubes for breakfast, a couple of walls for lunch and perhaps a bit of leisurely fun for the late. The surfing diet in the Ments is a well balanced and satisfying one.
There are waves that cater for all abilities, and a good captain knows how to deliver exactly what’s required to keep the stoke levels high for his guests. In the Mentawai the abundance of options will ensure an intermediate surfer will have just as much fun as the most hardened Indo veteran.
So what will you be riding? Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’re probably familiar with some of the big ticket waves on offer. Places like the mechanical lefthand perfection of Macaronis. The might of the supremely hollow and challenging Greenbush, The ruler edge right hand tubes of HT’s, The left/right run and gun combo of Nokandui and Rifles.
Of course these waves are on the bucket list of surfer’s around the globe, but there is so much more on offer in the Mentawai. There are literally too many spots to list here, and the captain of the MV Addiction has many off the radar spots at his disposal to ensure that while you can tick off the dream spots, there’s also the chance to slip under the radar and score some crowd-free gems too. With the added speed of the MV Addiction at your disposal, the northern regions of Nias can also become part of your itinerary.
The Mentawai Islands receive swell pretty much year round, but traditionally the best time to plan your trip would be from April to September, when the dry season is in residence and strong South-Southwest swells roll into the region from the southern latitudes. During this time of year the humidity, chance of rain and strong winds are also at their lowest.
If crowds are your main concern however, a visit during the wet season – October to March can still deliver epic waves, but there is a higher chance of rain and unfavourable winds.
As previously mentioned MV Addiction is one of the fastest boats on the water in the Mentawai Islands. Due to the fact that it a catamaran, It’s also one of the most stable boats available to charter, and as those who have visited the Mentawai before will attest, a smooth ride is almost as important as the waves themselves … almost.
As the Mentawai is a remote area, safety is a big priority for the crew of the MV Addiction. The The hulls are watertight bulkhead compartments that offer maximum protection in the unlikely event of hull breach. The engine rooms are fitted with air cut off switches and a CO2 fire suppression system.
The MV Addiction is also built to make your stay as comfortable as possible, and the crew pride themselves on this fact. The boat is spacious and decked out with an outdoor lounge to watch the waves or perhaps enjoy a cheeky sunset beer from. It also features an outdoor dining area, lower covered deck, bar and galley and spacious air conditioned lounge area with Plasma TV, perfect for kicking back with a movie or checking out the highlights from the days surfing.
MV Addiction usually caters for 10 surfers per charter, but can be stretched to 12 upon request.
Accommodation consists of three seperate cabins with double bed and single bed, and one cabin with four single beds.
