Monkeys South Telo Now Open!
Being a surfer, a trip to the Telo Islands should already be on your bucket list. What’s not to love about Indonesian perfection on tap, stunning natural surrounds and a lack of the crowds often found further south. With the opening of Monkeys South Telo there’s more reason than ever to get over there and tick it off.
Situated in a breathtaking and wave rich tropical bay at the far south of the Island chain, Monkeys South Telo was purposely placed by owner Mark Byrne to offer immediate access to some of the best waves in the archipelago, including the break that gives the resort its name, which you’ll find literally on your front doorstep.
How’s the serenity? Are you kidding me!
Monkeys is a user friendly and consistent right that will keep surfers of all abilities stoked. For experienced surfers the long tapered walls offer a high performance playground, where you can get radical without too much fear of reprisal. Beginner and intermediate surfers looking for an easy introduction to surfing over coral won’t feel out of their depth here either. When it’s smaller it’s possibly the best place in the Telos for that skill level.
Magnificent Monkeys and an iridescent Indian Ocean sky
Breaking in the same bay, Outside monkeys packs a bit more power in its punch. Again it’s all about those long right walls, but with just a little more spice to make things interesting.
The front yard isn’t too shabby.
New Schools offers an easy take-off, but things get hollower and much more interesting as you make your way down the line. Still suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Now that’s enough to get anyone excited
Bombers is one of the jewels in the Telo Island crown. A no nonsense right, it stands up abruptly and offers double foot to the floor tube sections that will live in your memory forever should you luck into a good one.
But what about the Goofy Footers? We all know you want lefts. Luckily there’s a bunch on offer including the mysterious Squirrels. We’ve heard whispers that it’s hard to tell apart from Macaronis when it’s on.
TC finding a little shade
Bojo’s is a super fun and mellow left that can break upwards of 300 metres on a good day. It’ll have the goofy footers in raptures.
Then there’s Gilly’s. A left that packs a serious punch as it moves in from deep water and unloads on the reef, offering some serious tube-time.
Monkeys South Telo also offers a rarity in Indo, A perfect beach break. This will be the go-to when the swell drops. Here you’ll feast on perfect a-frame tubes, not unlike South Stradbroke minus the people.
The fabled beachbreak of the Telo Islands
The resort itself consists of four brand new, private, air-conditioned bungalows and a dining pavillion. Each bungalow features a king-sized bed and two day beds, air-conditioning, 24/7 satellite WiFi, ensuite facilities and daily housekeeping services. Oh, and don’t forget the stunning views over the ocean and the magnificent bay.
The brand new bungalows look a treat.
In short, there’s a reason the legendary Tom Carroll and former tour surfer Kai Otton were two of the first guests through the door at the resort when it opened. The photos of which you can see below or you can check out the video here.
If you’re thinking of visiting this part of the world for your next surf adventure, Monkeys South Telo is highly worth considering. For more details on the resort see here
