Surf
Matanivusi has a supreme advantage over most Fijian surf resorts. While the waves of Vunanui Bay rival the best waves from most parts of the world, the seclusion and privacy mean you will be free to surf in near isolation.
You’ll also have access to waves such as Frigates Passage, which is a 45-minute boat ride away. The resort requires a minimum of three passengers to ride out to Frigates, but non-surfers are certainly invited to come along for the trip for a snorkel or swim.
Southerly fronts and low-pressure systems originating in the Tasman Sea result in great waves all year round, although the best time to visit is during the Island’s Dry Season (March-October), which regularly produces 8-12 feet swell. A pair of board shorts or bikini is all you’ll need to pack the year round as water temps rarely drop below 25 degrees Celsius.
J’s – Is a hollow, fast wave that breaks from 2’ to 6’. It’s best around the high tide with winds from NE to W. It needs some west in the swell to run down the reef.
Fiji Pipe – Is a hollow and sometimes heavy left hand reef break that breaks really good on 2-6 ft swells. The SE trade winds blow offshore all day here during winter and can create some epic barrel rides.
Frigates – Is definitely a world class left that can rival Cloud break for power, size and consistency. Because of the gradual tapering of the reef it can handle all swell sizes. The SE trade winds are offshore, so when the inside waves near Matanivusi are blown out there is always the consistent Frigates.
Because it’s out in the ocean, about 20 kilometers from Matanivusi, it picks up all swell. However some west in the swell can make it a bit dicey. It definitely makes the end section stand up! Frigates is accessed be a number of resorts and can get crowded. However, once the swell gets up over 10’ there is a drop in the numbers tackling the waves. A longer board is recommended to tackle the big drops and strong off shore winds.
Shifties – Has a deep water take off making the break a ‘not too threatening’ ride. This outside point of the Barrier Reef picks up all the swell and can be double the size of J’s and Vunaniu. It is powerful and thick. When everywhere else is flat you can almost guarantee a 4 foot wave at Shifties. Also it can be surfed at all tides. Again a wind of the north quadrant is needed.
Vunaniu – Is a short wedging right which has a bowl section at the end, usually smaller than other breaks. Good option for kids down on the inside at high tide. It does get good.

The accommodation bures are tucked between a creek at the rear of the building and coconut palms, exotic flowers and plants at the front, then the beach. Sustainability
Matanivusi Eco Resort holds the title of the World’s First Stoked Certified surf resort.
Before building the resort, Matanivusi’s owners, Brian and Donna had an Environmental Impact Study conducted for the property and discussed these findings and their plans for development with the local community before starting construction. Each bure was built around the existing vegetation with minimal clearing to allow for the raised buildings and pathways to be installed a metre above ground level. The native vegetation along the beachfront has been maintained and new plantings protect the beach from any erosion and rising storm surges.
All food is sourced sustainably and staff are also employed from nearby villages and paid well. It’s this consciousness of the local environment and economy that makes Matanivusi a pleasure for both guests and locals to visit and work for.
Matanivusi set’s a benchmark for similar surf resorts, boats and the entire surf-travel industry that promotes surfers leaving behind nothing but footprints and giving back to the communities that provide them with such enjoyment both in and out of the water.
