About Kottukal Beach House
Kottukal Beach House is located on the beautiful and culturally rich South East Coast of Sri Lanka in the village of Pottuvil. Here, boutique villa accommodation sits among two acres of coconut gardens, which is surrounded by a seemingly endless stretch of luscious unspoiled beach where the wave rich Indian Ocean provides the perfect playground for those seeking a unique and experience rich surfing holiday.
A leisurely stroll up the beach from Kottukal is Pottuvil Point – the closest wave to the beach house. A Sand bottom point, Pottuvil offers the funnest of runners that zip along just metres from the beach in a tropical setting. It’s the perfect wave to find your feet and get into the Sri Lankan groove, and is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of beginners and experienced surfers alike.
Of course you can’t talk about surfing and Sri Lanka without mentioning the jewel in the crown – Arugam Bay – The dreamy right hand point that was the original catalyst for surfers’ love affair with the Island nation. The runners of Arugam can be seen peeling off in the distance from Kottukal and they are perfectly situated to get you out and amongst it.
There are also a number of other waves in the region to ride including Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, Crocodile Rock and Sangamankanda Point.
The experience out of the water in Sri Lanka can be just as rewarding. There are two national parks within an easy day trip of Kottukal Beach House, and there you can catch a glimpse of elephants, leopard, sloth bear, crocodile and more. The whole region is also known for its exotic flora, prized for its use in Ayurvedic medicine.
Kottukal Beach House is aware of the sensitive natural environment in which they operate. A sustainable and environmentally sensitive approach is of huge importance to them and they are proud of the many initiatives they undertake to achieve this, including their Jetwing Eternal Earth Programme and Green Directory.

If you are looking to weave surfing into your visit to Sri Lanka, the best time to go can vary. Kottukal Beach house is located on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, so for the best surf you’ll be jetting in from May to September, and for the west coast (Hikkaduwa), your best bet is from November to March.
The country offers everything from long sand bottom points, to fun beach breaks and mystical reefs that lay in wait for the adventurous. There’s really only one word that best describes the surfing experience in Sri Lanka, and that is fun! There are waves to satisfy all surfing appetites, but Sri Lanka is a particularly good place for beginners and intermediate surfers to sharpen their abilities in friendly waves.
Pottuvil Point is the closest wave to Kottukal Beach House and is a right-hand point set on a beautiful peninsula-like stretch of beach. It’s an ideal wave for beginner surfers but the novelty factor of perfect runners breaking metres from the sand is enough to stoke out even the most advanced surfers. Perfect for a funboard, fish or longboard.
The most sought after wave in Sri Lanka and with good reason. It’s a super fun right-hand point that offers rippable walls and even the odd sneaky tube section. Arugam’s popularity means you’re probably unlikely to score a solo session here, in fact it’s probably guaranteed to be crowded, but show respect to the local surfers, wait your turn and you’ll get your slice of the action. Don’t forget, there is reef at Arugam, so caution upon entering and exiting the water is needed.
Another right-hand point (surprise surprise) that is a good option for sneaking away from the crowds at Arugam Bay. The name comes from the crocs that frequent the adjacent Heda Oya Lagoon. Needs a bit bigger swell to get going. When Arugam is six feet, Crocodile Rock will generally be three feet.
You guessed it, another right-hand point. Located in Urani, Whiskey Point is a little further afield. It offers surfers a real chance at some Sri Lankan solitude, not to mention super-fun runners that will please beginners and advanced surfers alike. It also has one of the easiest paddle-outs of all the waves, which is an added bonus.
Located to the South of Pottuvil and Arugam Bay, picturesque Peanut Farm is a beautiful place to get away from the main hub for a day of swimming and surfing. The wave itself is made up of two breaks – Main Point and Peanut Farm. Main Point is perfect for more advanced surfers, where you’ll ride highly rippable rights just off the rocks. Peanut Farm is the inside of the waves and is great for beginners to practice their newfound passion.
Lighthouse Point / Green Point
This wave is located roughly 10 kilometres from Pottuvil and is well off the beaten track. It offers surfers a stunning scenic drive on the way, and once there you will enjoy more super-fun right-handers that break off a rocky outcrop.
Dining at Kottukal Beach House is a culinary journey – from traditional Sri Lankan fare to Eastern and Western favourites.
The main dining room overlooks the garden and beach, and is the perfect setting to get your day underway, or to kick back and feast after a days surfing and sightseeing.
Breakfast is included daily, and can even be taken on the beach at sunrise for those keen to hit the waves.
Lunch and dinner have a set menu, but eating times are flexible, and meals on request are available with prior notice.
For those looking for something a little more romantic, Kottukal offers a candle lit dinner for two on the beach. Or for larger groups, why not go all out with a beach BBQ.
Kottukal Beach house is also the ideal location for a family celebration or a private wedding party.
When the spaghetti legs set in from surfing endless right-hand points, there’s plenty of amazing activities to keep you entertained during your stay at Kottukal Beach House.
A must do are the Yala, Kumana and Lahugala national parks. Take a day trip to these luscious and unspoiled Sri Lankan nature reserves and you’ll come back having seen some of the most amazing flora and fauna on the planet, including elephants, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles and more.
