Maldives magic without breaking the bank!
Kandooma Surf Resort is located in the South Male atoll of the Maldives. A visually spectacular 40-minute speedboat ride from Velana International Airport on the island capital of Male will get you there.
Upon arrival surfers quickly realise it doesn’t get much better than the set-up offered at Kandooma. The island itself is stunning – surrounded by the whitest of sands and the bluest of water, and tastefully laid out over the interior is the luxurious resort that rests naturally among the lush green tropical foliage of the Island.
For surfers the best surprise waits on the eastern side of the Island. That’s where you’ll find Kandooma Right – a long, perfect right-hander that races down a reef not 50 metres off the island, offering everything from tubes to perfect open walls as you ride down the line. Surfable at almost any size, it really is one of the funnest and most versatile waves in the Maldives.
Stay in one of the villas facing the wave and you’re literally seconds from the lineup. Sneak out for the sunrise session and you’ll be back before breakfast!
If you get a little bored with the perfection offered out the front, there are also numerous other high quality breaks a short boat ride away, and with the pre-purchase of a surf pass, you will be entitled to two boat trips per day to sample them.
Kandooma is also a perfect holiday destination for surfers travelling with a family or as a couple. The resort has an almost endless list of activities, entertainment and pampering on offer that make it not only paradise for wave riders but also for those who aren’t hitting the lineup.
The natural beauty of Kandooma Island is also a major drawcard. At 32 acres it is a great size. A relaxed twenty-minute stroll will get you around it comfortably, and the thoughtful, and leafy design of the resort means you never feel cramped. You’ll always be able to stroll along the many stunning beach areas and find your own slice of seclusion to relax in.
The sealife rich lagoons also offer amazing and safe snorkeling areas for kids and adults alike. If you’re feeling game, there are also some of the best dive sites on the planet not far off shore, where you’ll come face to face with Manta Rays and even Whale Sharks.
To top it all off, the culinary experience at Kandooma resort is as varied as it is tasty. From simple and tasty poolside snacks, right up to the opulence of The Kitchen – Kandooma’s showcase dining experience that offers the best view in the Resort as well as first-class fare and 250 different wines!
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better family option in the Maldives, especially at a price that doesn’t bring a tear to the eye.

As previously mentioned, the set up at Kandooma couldn’t be better designed for a surfer. You’ll have the perfection of Kandooma Right literally at your fingertips for the duration of your stay.
The resort caps surfer numbers at a maximum of 50, although you’ll very rarely share the lineup with that many people. The resort is also now enforcing exclusivity of the wave, meaning that no charter boats or nearby resorts can drop in on your session.
Kandooma Right itself is world class. A long righthand reef/point hybrid, it’s a super versatile wave, catering for a wide variety of abilities and can deliver a ride with everything from deep tube rides to beautifully tapered walls and everything in between. At size it will keep even the most experienced surfers smiling from ear to ear, and when it mellows, Kandooma makes for a super fun session on a fish and the perfect place for intermediate surfers to get amongst it.
Should guests want to get adventurous, there are a good selection of quality waves within a short speedboat ride of the resort.
Located on a small strip of reef in the channel on the southern side of Kandooma Island, Riptides dishes up a right that has a reputation as being one of the best in the area. Named after the strong currents that flow through the channel on either side of the wave.
Foxy’s is a fast and hollow left that breaks off Lhosfushi Island located to the immediate south of Kandooma Island. It can be accessed via a short paddle through the Water Villa lagoon and a quick island hop.
Twin Peaks is a local swell magnet that can offer a wave when conditions drop off. As the name suggests it is a split peak with both a left and a right option.
A high quality right that offers a highly rippable and long ride. Needs a little more swell than most other spots.
A fast but flawless left that zippers down the reef. Well worth a visit if conditions are right. One of the best waves in South Male Atoll.
North Male Day Trip
If word filters through that the surf is pumping in the nearby North Male Atoll, Kandooma can organize a day trip to sample the waves for its guests. Lunch will be provided and so will the beers on the way home. Please note that this is subject to weather conditions and the number of surfers needed.
Best Time to Go
To ensure you get the best waves during your trip, the surf season in the South Male Atoll is from March to October when low-pressure systems in the southern Indian Ocean deliver swell into the region.
This can then be further divided into three smaller windows. March, April and May are generally when you will find the cleanest conditions, but perhaps not always the biggest swell. The biggest swell is usually found during June and August. While September to October produce consistent swell, but also have the potential for more variable wind conditions.
All three of these windows can generate epic waves; it’s just a personal preference as to when you visit. One other thing to be mindful of is that crowds can be a little more forgiving in the early and late season.

Kandooma Resort currently sits at the highest achievable level of the IHG Green Engage system, an initiative by the Intercontinental Hotels Group designed to help resorts reduce their energy, water and waste, and improve their impact on the environment.
They achieve this through a number of implemented sustainability efforts including producing all fresh water used by the resort on the island and supporting a project to fund two new water plants for the islands, providing a clean and sustainable water supply.
Kandooma works with locals in the community to help preserve the beauty of their surroundings. The hotel employs people from neighboring islands to clean the beaches around the hotel every morning.
Also employed by the resort are marine biologists who maintain the local waters, even growing new reef. The hotel aims to educate guests on the importance of looking after coral and treating it with respect. This means guests get to enjoy the bio-diversity under the water, while also understanding its importance.
