The best time to come and surf J-Bay is from March to October as the prominent south swells are a consistent 3-6 ft. Water temps at this time are a bit chilly so a 3mm wetsuit is recommended. The J-Bay wave consists of five separate sections, with sections to accommodate all surfing abilities. On good days with the right swell direction some of these sections can be connected forming one of the longest waves in the world.
Super Tubes: Waves here can get solid in the 10ft range. This is the ultimate test of your surfing ability. It is very fast, powerful, long and as the name suggests has amazing barrel sections.
Salad Bowls and Tubes are short, perfect, hollow sections of the bay.
The Point is the longest section of the wave and has plenty of sections for practicing your turns. This part of the wave is usually a bit smaller than the outside sections
J-Bay Surf Retreats is beach front overlooking famous Super and has accommodation options to suit all travellers.
Budget Package – Island Vibe
Located amidst the dunes with a panoramic ocean view, Island Vibe is the ideal option for any beach lover on a budget. With Sth Africa’s best waves on your doorstep, you can hear the crash of the surf from your bed as the swell pulls in. Island Vibe has been voted “Best Budget Accommodation in South Africa”.
All around the backpackers you have a typical wooden balcony overlooking the endless ivory beach. All rooms have a sea view, and there are dorms and doubles with en-suites to choose from. A fully equipped self-catering kitchen and a BBQ are available.
Activities & equipment at Island Vibe include stunt kites, snorkeling gear, body boards, etc. and of course surfboards and wetsuits can be rented. The head office of “Jeffrey’s Bay Surf School” is at Island Vibe so surf lessons for beginners can easily be arranged.
At Island Vibe it’s all about “fun”, and they sure succeed in it! For chillin’ out after surfing, you can shoot some pool, watch a movie from the surf video library or satellite TV, relax in the garden, have a drink in the house bar, etc. This fully licensed bar has a daily happy hour and a weekly theme night.
Deluxe Option – African Perfection
African Perfection Guest House is positioned on the edge of Supertubes.
You can choose from Mini suites, Family suites, Seafront Suites or the Loft suite. All nine luxurious suites are individually decorated with a distinct and celebrated African sentiment. They are adapted to your personal needs including a mini-bar, satellite TV, current magazines, bath oils& body lotions and a private balcony with a breath-taking ocean view. This balcony gives you a view of the legendary perfect right-hand surf breaks Jeffrey’s Bay offers.
The loft suite has room for 4 to 6 people. It has 2 bathrooms, a living room and its own kitchen. The loft suite exists out of several spaces segregated from each other by removable partitions which create a spacious feeling. In the basement of ‘African Perfection’ Guest house you find a restaurant and sushi bar called ‘Twenty Pepper Street’. Here, the menu offers a wide diversity of meals; from a continental breakfast to the best sushi, prepared by the singing cook ‘Steve Walsh’ and his well trained staff.
Wake up with the morning sun, have an early surfing session before having a delicious breakfast in the a la carte restaurant, surf the best waves during the day and watch the dolphins use the ‘supertubes’ as their playground, visit the local shops and board factories and have dinner in the in-house sushi bar before you watch the sun set over the water.
Packages include a continental breakfast everyday.
One free BBQ (Brai) is included)
In South Africa, you’ll find dishes influenced by the indigenous population, along with the Dutch, French, Indians and Malaysians and as such it offers a vibrant cuisine that’s sure to excite the palate.
If you set foot on South African soil, don’t leave before you’ve enjoyed a traditional al fresco braai, as much for the barbecued food as for the cultural experience. Follow it up with a popular melktert (custard-filled pastry) and if you fancy a little snifter to finish then a sweet and creamy glass of Amarula (liqueur) will definitely do the trick.
Don’t leave South Africa without eating:
Biltong & droewors
Dry curing was a method used to preserve meat by the indigenous tribes of South Africa before fridges were invented. Usually made from beef or game, such as springbok, biltong (a thinly sliced, air-dried meat) and droewors (an air-dried sausage) are traditionally eaten as snacks. The meat is cured in a mixture of vinegar, salt, sugar and spices such as coriander and pepper, then hung to dry. The finished product is prized by health enthusiasts for its high protein and low fat content. Nowadays, biltong and droewors producers often add flavourings such as chilli or garlic to the meat and use a variety of meats, such as ostrich and wild boar.
This is a traditional South African sausage made from beef, mixed with either pork or lamb and a mixture of spices. Boerewors are traditionally served in a coiled shape, similar to the Cumberland sausage and cooked on a braai (barbecue). The word boerewors comes from the Afrikaans and Dutch words boer (farmer) and wors (sausage).
Lombardini Game Farm
Lombardini Game Farm is situated in the Seekoei River Valley just outside Jeffrey’s Bay, only a few minutes away. Their professional tour guides take you around the park to introduce you to the wonders of African nature. More than 20 different kinds of African species are preserved in this reservation, including the White Rhino, Giraffe, Buffalo, Fish Eagles, different species of Antelope, etc…
Your guide will take you as close as possible to observe and photograph them. Of course safety is always remained. During the tour he gives explanation about the animals you’re spotting.
Our second offer is Lion Park in Port Elizabeth, a forty minutes drive away from J-Bay. Lion Park offers visitors a unique close-up game viewing experience of wild animals in their natural habitat. As the name implies Lion Park’s main attraction is the lions.
Several years ago the white lion was very close to extinction. To give this species a change for survival, the park started a breeding program. The aim of the Park’s continued breeding program is to create a second gene pool to breed healthy white lions and to conserve this rare species. This means encouraging the breeding, raising the cubs to strong and healthy lions and setting them free into nature.
There is normally the opportunity to witness feeding time and possibly you may be able to pet the little lion cubs.
The cubs up to 3 months old are kept apart so they can grow strong to compete with the others. At this stage, they are very playful and curious to humans and don’t mind playing a little game of innocent wrestling or with you.
Apart from its primary role as a game-viewing and lion-breeding facility, the Lion Park is also a renowned sanctuary which successfully treats and rehabilitates many sick or injured animals. The park also offers tigers, zebra’s (who run around freely) and a big amount of African birds
