Sumatra, located west of Java and south of the Malay Peninsula, is the largest island located entirely in Indonesia (after Borneo, which is shared between Indonesia and other countries) and the sixth-largest island in the world at 473,481 square kilometres. Boasting a population of over 50 million, this paradise is famed for its rugged and tropical terrain, active volcanoes and 10 national parks home to various endangered wildlife; including the Sumatran Tiger. Yep, that’s right… We’re talking about an actual giant cat with stripes, razor-sharp claws and bone-crunching carnassials – it’s estimated there to be fewer than 400 of these incredible creatures left on the Island, but that doesn’t mean you should get complacent and go strolling through the jungle with pork-chops strapped to your ankles.
