It was past the beautiful southern coastline of Sri Lanka where trade winds once carried legendary explorers like Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta and Fa-Hsien. It’s also here, among the towering ocean cliffs, beautiful beaches and palm fringed shores you’ll find Cape Weligama Resort.
About Cape Weligama
Located thirty minutes east of Galle, Cape Weligama is set atop its own promontory, overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean and is seamlessly woven into twelve manicured acres of Sri Lankan gardens.
Cape Welligama offers guests 39 private retreats, which have all been meticulously designed by one of Asia’s most celebrated architects, Lek Bunnag.
The hotel also offers an array of international dining venues and a 60-metre crescent-shaped infinity pool, all of which capture Weligama’s iconic sunsets.
For surfers, the cliffs of the resort’s promontory fall away to reveal fun waves breaking throughout the local area. And that is the key word … fun!
Here there are waves for all abilities, but the southern coast of Sri Lanka is the perfect holiday destination for beginner and intermediate surfers looking to sharpen their skills in beautiful surrounds.
For advanced surfers there is still plenty of fun to be had, and often there will be three-six foot waves to keep you entertained, but their mellow nature make this a perfect location if you’re looking for a holiday where your sole focus isn’t just surfing, but want to be able to sneak in a few fun sessions between sightseeing adventures.
There are also options with a little more grunt a short drive away in the neighboring village of Mirissa and a little further afield in Hikkaduwa.

The Surf
The southern coastline of Sri Lanka works under a different seasonal window to the better-known surfing hub of the East Coast. At Cape Welligama the best time for waves is from the end of October through to April. At this time of year winds will be favourable, the water will be clean and you’ll have consistent surf rolling in.
That’s not to say there’s no waves outside of the aforementioned window … sometimes it’s even bigger … but sadly this is when the onshore winds blow and scoring a clean day can be tricky. It’s also when the region has higher monthly rainfall, which leads to the ocean transforming into an unattractive brown soup, not exactly what you picture when thinking of a surf trip to the tropics.
There are several waves in close to proximity to Cape Weligama, so let’s take a look at what you’ll be riding:
Weligama Beach
This one is for the beginners. Gentle waves roll into the beach at Weligama and it’s the perfect place to grab a W15 surf lesson and begin your journey into surfing.
Kabalana
Steeping up the quality, Kabalana is one of the best waves on the coast. A split peak reef, Kabalana offers rights and lefts with a little more punch and rippable walls. There’s also a beachbreak here for beginners to rip into.
Midigama
Midigama is a fun loping left, which breaks over a deep reef. It holds up to 5-6 feet, and offers fun for intermediate and advanced surfers when it’s at its best.
Ram’s Point
Ram’s is named for the owner of the guesthouse opposite the break. With fast running lefts and rights over a shallower reef, this is where you’ll find your tube-time.
Plantation Point
A fun wave for intermediate and advanced surfers, Plantation Point is mostly a right, but offers a left on the right swell.
Activities
By now we’re all aware there’s plenty of action in the water to keep you entertained at Cape Weligama. But there is so much more to Sri Lanka than simply surfing. Cape weligama’s staff will ensure that guests are able to make the most of their experience on this culturally rich island by offering a brilliant range of activities to get involved with.
If you insist on staying wet, you can swim and snorkel in the bay beneath Cape Weligama or explore neighbouring coves by kayak, stop in at the dive centre, to complete a range of PADI dive courses.
Other off shore activities include private sunset cruises, big game fishing charters and banana boating.
Cape Weligama’s luxury catamaran is also available for whale watching, taking you beyond the bay area to open waters, making it an experience that must be on your to-do list!
On dry land you can explore Sri Lanka’s lush rural hinterland of sleepy villages, paddy fields, meandering lagoons and ancient temples with a guided bicycle ride.
Other must see destinations include Mirissa’s vibrant boat harbour and the historic Galle Fort where cobbled streets encased in coral and granite walls reveal ochre washed colonnaded houses, colonial churches, and renowned jewellery boutiques.
A day trip to the Uda Walawe national park is also highly advised. Here you might catch a glimpse of elephants, sloth bears & crocodiles!
