The Surf
The Mentawai Islands is a viable year-round global surfing hotspot; with the most consistent swell period lasting between March and November. Awera Resort boasts several waves within very close proximity, whereas, Sipora, is the gateway to the islands of North Pagai (south) and Siberut Island (north) which are home to some of the planet’s most iconic and desirable line-ups. Awera Resort is strategically located within easy access of a huge range of waves.
Guests have access to professional surf guides, surf lessons (USD 50 per person), a private photographer (at an extra cost) the resort’s fleet of professionally skippered fast boats which are free of charge and available upon request. There is three waves immediately accessible in the bay of the resort, but Soul Surf Travel has listed the below surf spots to help you get the froth when planning your attack on the region’s diverse waves.
Out The Front:
This wave is right out front of Awera Resort and is a 500-metre end section of a long reef that boasts several nice barrel sections.
Tikus:
This left-hander, which requires a fair bit of swell to start breaking, serves up a barrel on the take-off immediately followed by a turn section — you’ll need to be on your game in order to really make the most of it. Best at mid-tide, it can work practically the whole way through the tide depending on the swell.
Ombak Tidur:
This break is one of the most consistent right-handers in the region and works on all tides, keeping surfers entertained with a few different peaks.
Telescopes:
This wave is regularly voted as one of the best waves in the world. The flat and even bottom makes it a relatively safe surf break. When the swell exceeds three-foot, barrels alternate with less hollow sections, allowing surfers to execute several turns.
Icelands:
This wave is a swell magnet which offers smaller conditions to one of the heaviest and most photogenic waves in the region when it’s cooking. Depending on the direction, it can handle swells of up to 10 foot and provide spectacular conditions.
Scarecrows:
This wave, located in front of an island called Pittojat, is the longest in the area, offering surfers rides of up to 300m in length. It’s perhaps not the most perfect wave in the Mentawai, but it’s still one of the best spots to lay into some turns and tuck into a few barrels.
HTs:
This wave, real name Hollow Trees (aka Lance’s Right) is a hollow righthand barrel – located roughly 80 minutes boat ride south of Sipora, this iconic wave is the darling of the world surf media and arguably the jewel of the Mentawai surf treasure trove.
Playgrounds:
Playgrounds is the surfing equivalent of a modern high-performance skate park – located 60 minutes boat ride north of Sipora, this wave rich region is home to iconic and expert-level breaks such as Rifles, No Kandui, Bankvaults, Greenbush and Macaronis.
