Sri Lanka’s lush, vibrant and remote southern coastline is quickly becoming a favourite among the Island’s visitors, and Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort is the place to stay if you want to experience all it from the lap of luxury.
About Anantara Peace Haven
The resort was recently recognised in Condé Nast Traveler US’s prestigious 2017 Host List as one of the best new hotels in the world as well as one of the hottest new openings in Sri Lanka.
The resort itself is located on a pristine and secluded stretch of coastline, nestled perfectly into a tropical coconut plantation. This position also offers guests unhindered views of the stunning Indian Ocean and it’s the perfect place to base yourself as you explore this truly remarkable and unique part of the world.
Not only is the southern coast of Sri Lanka becoming popular with travellers, but is also becoming an increasingly sought after location for surfers on the lookout for an alternative to the crowded East Coast hotspots.
Here there are waves for all abilities, but the southern coast of Sri Lanka is the perfect place to visit for beginner and intermediate surfers looking to sharpen their skills while enjoying everything the Island has to offer.
Within 15 minutes of Anantara there are worthy set-ups to check out, including pointbreaks, hollow and peaky beachbreaks, beginner beachbreaks and there are even whispers of a big wave spot for those seeking a challenge. It’s rarely crowded here, and is paradise for beginners and intermediate surfers seeking solitude.
For advanced surfers there is still plenty of fun to be had, but the mellow nature of the waves make this a perfect location if you’re looking for a holiday where your sole focus isn’t just surfing, but you still want to be able to sneak in a few fun sessions between sightseeing adventures.
If you’re willing to hit the road, there are also options with a little more grunt a short drive away in the villages of Welligama, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa.

The southern coastline of Sri Lanka is a somewhat new frontier in terms of surfing, and as such is rarely crowded – a stark contrast to the East Coast hotspots of Arugam Bay. Here coastal cliffs recede to reveal stunning beaches, bays and all kinds of nooks and crannies, many packing surfable waves.
As a further contrast to the East Coast, the South Coast works under a different seasonal window. The best time for waves is from the end of October through to April. At this time of year winds will be favourable, the water will be clean and you’ll have consistent surf rolling in.
That’s not to say there are no waves outside of the aforementioned window. Sometimes it’s even bigger, but this is when the unfavourable winds blow and scoring a clean day can be tricky. It’s also when the region has higher monthly rainfall, which leads to the ocean being stained brown – not exactly what you picture when thinking of a surf trip to the tropics.
Anantara Resort is situated a little out of the way in terms of the major South Coast surf spots, but there are plenty of local rocky coves that transform unruly swells into some fun waves.
Within 15 minutes of Anantara there are worthy set-ups to check out. This includes pointbreaks, hollow and peaky beachbreaks, beginner beachbreaks and there are even whispers of a big wave spot for those seeking a challenge.
It’s also worth checking out Dickwella, and Nilwella for waves, plus the extensive sands leading to Hambantota, before the main road heads inland.
About an hour’s drive east from Anantara you’ll start to run into some of the South Coast’s better waves including:
This one is for the beginners. Gentle waves roll into the beach at Weligama and it’s the perfect place to grab a W15 surf lesson and begin your journey into surfing.
Steeping up the quality, Kabalana is one of the best waves on the coast. A split peak reef, Kabalana offers rights and lefts with a little more punch and rippable walls. There’s also a beachbreak here for beginners to rip into.
Midigama is a fun loping left, which breaks over a deep reef. It holds up to 5-6 feet, and offers fun for intermediate and advanced surfers when it’s at its best.
Ram’s is named for the owner of the guesthouse opposite the break. With fast running lefts and rights over a shallower reef, this is where you’ll find your tube-time.
A fun wave for intermediate and advanced surfers, Plantation Point is mostly a right, but offers a left on the right swell.
Dining at Anantara
The Culinary options at Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort embrace Sri Lankan flavours and cultural traditions. Offering stunning cliff edge, shoreline and poolside dining settings, it’s an unforgettable experience.
Promising a culinary journey around the globe, Journeys restaurant overlooks both the pool and the Indian Ocean. The open kitchen enables guests to watch on as the chefs cook a tasty array of Sri Lankan, Middle Eastern, Asian and international dishes.
An Italian restaurant perched perfectly on a cliff edge facing the ocean. Il Mare offers fine dining and spectacular views. Fresh catches of the day are brought ashore by local fishermen to Anantara’s beach and handed over Il Mare’s master chefs who transform them into dishes inspired by the Italian coastline. Al this is paired this with fine wines, authentic Italian desserts, gourmet cheeses, and choice of coffees, liquors and cognacs and you’re in for a real treat.
Add an element of fun to your dining experience with some Teppanyaki at this specialty beachside restaurant. Experience the vibrant entertainment of the master chef’s skillful acrobatic shows, while creating succulent meat and fresh seafood dishes with a dash of local flair.
El Vine allows you to share connoisseur degustation menus and tapas style creations with impeccable wine pairings. Spend a convivial evening in the company of our chef, savouring cuisine that is a real talking point.
The Poolside bar is the place where you can grab refreshments, snacks and light bites all day long. Enjoy them in the shaded bar or while relaxing on loungers by the pool. There are also cocktails, chilled beers and wine. The perfect place to refuel after a surf.
The Lobby Lounge
A charming lounge with south Ceylon colonial ambience that offers the afternoon tradition of high tea. Enjoy a variety of boutique and single estate teas from the highlands, served with the pastry chef’s meticulous creations of freshly baked scones and homemade local fruit jams.
Dining By Design
Experience the ultimate in tailor made private dining. Select your ideal cuisine from a collection of connoisseur menus, to be prepared by your personal chef. Perfect for something a little more romantic.
